GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The last time you were waiting for take-off, did you notice two big numbers on the airport runway? Tech Insider has an explanation.

According to a video released by the company, a subsidiary of Business Insider, the numbers each match a direction between 01 and 36, corresponding to the 360 degrees on a compass. The difference between the two numbers is 18 - on every runway in the world.

These numbers closely match the direction of magnetic north, which can sometimes shift and lead to renumbering. Readings are checked and updated if necessary every 5 years, according to Tech Insider
