GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The day BMW announced they would build a new plant in Spartanburg, is a day Spartanburg County Councilman, David Britt won’t forget. He says the announcement changed the fortunes of Spartanburg's economy.

"In the late 80's and early 90's we lost 25,000 jobs in Spartanburg,” explained Britt. “It took the breath right out of Spartanburg County."

Monday, 25 years later, the car manufacturer made another massive announcement. They would add another 1,000 jobs.

"From 1992 until today, we've had nearly $16 billion invested in Spartanburg County and 45,000 new jobs,” explained Britt. “That does not count the 1,000 BMW added today."

Morgan Titus with America's Home Place says BMW's success brought them customers. According to Britt, since BMW's announcement 25 years ago, the county's population grew by more than 100,000 people.

"Yeah, a lot of our clients. The big names out here,” explained Titus. “Michelin, BMW and those are powerhouses that obviously are our powerhouses to building a big client base."

Titus says the home-building industry is already on an uptick, adding more jobs in the area only further benefits his company.

"It used to be about three months because building has gotten so extreme,” explained Titus. “Everybody is so busy it's hard to get things out a little faster than that."

Britt says more than 120 international companies have followed suit since BMW led the way more than two decades ago.

"BMW is the instigator of all this success and growth,” said Britt. “They are the gift that keeps on giving."
