CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

David Leslie Tindal Jr., who served for two decades as South Carolina’s commissioner of agriculture, died Tuesday at age 89, according to an obituary from Stephens Funeral Home.

Tindal, who twice received the state’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, died at his home in Pinewood, SC.

Tindal attended Furman university before beginning his career as a farmer in 1949.

He served as South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1982 to 2002 when he retired from the office.

The obituary stated Tindal brought new crops to South Carolina and encouraged the use of new technology to help farmers’ efficiency and profitability. The SC Department of Agriculture developed the Small Farms Program, SC Quality Program, Serving SC Quality Program, and the SCDA Equine Program under his leadership.

Tindal also served on the Clemson University Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1982, the university stated in a news release. The Clemson board of the trustees approved a resolution naming Tindal a trustee emeritus after he left the board, honoring him for his service to the university and “his contributions to the growth and progress of the state’s agri-business industry [that] are widely known and respected, especially his leadership in bringing soybeans to prominence as a crop for South Carolina and export commodity for the United States,” the news release stated.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood.

Gov. Henry McMaster ordered that flags be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown on Friday in Tindal's memory.
