Officials ID man who drowned in Lake James in McDowell Co.

NEBO, NC (FOX Carolina) -

EMS said a victim has died after drowning at Lake James in McDowell County on Saturday.

William Kehler of McDowell County EMS said they received a call around 4:15 p.m. about a possible drowning off Lake James Road near Black Bear Access Area.

McDowell EMS, McDowell Rescue, Hankins Fire Department and McDowell Sheriff's Office all responded to assist. Kehler said divers from McDowell Rescue located the victim underwater at 4:59 p.m.

The incident occurred in an area known as "Black Bear Cove" on Lake James, according to Kehler. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say the victim was 28-year-old Jeremy Terran Benjamin of Savannah, GA.

This incident remains under investigation by NC Wildlife and the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.
