MOUNTAIN REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A 39-year-old Spartanburg County man died Sunday night after falling along the Chattooga River Trail in Mountain Rest, according to Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis.

Addis said the man appeared to have been walking the trail toward Burrell’s Ford Road when he fell off a ledge and approximately 15-feet to the ground below.

The accident is believed to have occurred around 10 p.m. The ground was slick from rain that fell Sunday afternoon.

The man and a female friend had hiked the trail earlier in the day and planned to camp overnight with some friends in the area.

Addis said the fall is believed to have taken place while the victim’s female friend was heading back to their car to retrieve items for the overnight stay.

Addis said a 911 was placed around 11 p.m. after the victim's body was found beneath the ledge.

The victim was later identified as Vincent Scott Keefauver of Spartanburg. Keefauver suffered a broken neck, the coroner determined after a post-mortem exam.

His death was ruled accidental.
