CHARLESTON, SC (AP) -

Safety warnings are being attached to horse-drawn carriages in Charleston's historic district.

The city says carriages will start carrying signs later this month reminding drivers to keep a safe distance between their vehicle and the carriage in front of them. The signs will also suggest that drivers refrain from honking their horns unless necessary.

City officials say the signs are the result of a voluntary agreement between the city and local horse carriage companies.

There have been several recent safety incidents involving the carriages, which roam alongside cars through Charleston's historic streets. Last month, a carriage horse damaged a car and flung out his driver. In May, a woman wearing a dinosaur costume was charged with disorderly conduct after she scared two horses pulling a carriage of tourists.
