DUE WEST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers with the SC Highway Patrol said a teen has been charged with driving under the influence after a July 4 crash in Abbeville County that claimed another teen's life.

The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on John Gray Road, a gravel stretch of road just off Keowee Road.

Troopers said a 16-year-old from Belton was driving a 1987 Mazda pickup when the truck ran off the road, hit and embankment and overturned.

The driver was not hurt but troopers said a passenger riding in the truck was killed.

Coroner Ronnie Ashley identified the victim as 17-year-old Tyler Ferguson of Belton. Ferguson died at the scene.

The coroner said neither teen was wearing a seat belt.

The 16-year-old driver was charged was felony DUI resulting in death, driving an uninsured vehicle, and minor in possession of alcohol.

The teen was released into his parents’ custody. His name was not released due to his age.

Richard Rosenberger, Superintendent for Anderson County School District Two, said Ferguson was a student at Belton-Honea Path High School.
