CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

If you have ever driven through Clemson, chances are you have seen the iconic Clemson House sign lighting up the skyline, but this iconic sign will soon be gone.

On Thursday morning, the sign above Clemson House will be taken down. The building itself will be demolished in the fall to make way for new buildings and facilities for the university.

Many students and alumni say it’s a bittersweet ending to a building that has stood on campus for more than sixty years.

"I hate that the sign is coming down. It's one of those few buildings that you see every time you come into Clemson,” said Trevor Newton.

For students like Clemson senior, Trevor Newton, Clemson House is not only a part of the university, but a part of them, too.

"I lived in Clemson my whole life. The first time I ever moved out of my childhood home was to Clemson House so it carries extra weight for me," said Newton.

The ‘house on hill’ has been around since the 1950s. It was first a hotel, then apartments and most recently, student housing.

“A lot of memories were created here,” said Denise Amos, “It's been here a long time and I can't believe it's actually going to be taken down."

Denis Amos works at Clemson University and like many others says she’s sad to see the end of an era, but optimistic to see what the future holds.

The sign is set to come down at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

"There definitely will be a hole in the sky, and nothing will replace it. You can't replace those neon letters in that spot where they are now," said Newton.

The Clemson House building will stand a while longer, but is expected to be demolished in the fall.  After the demolition, new construction will begin on the property, which will become home to the College of Business.
