SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters in Spartanburg County were called to the scene of a child locked in a hot car on Thursday.

Bryan Blackwell with the Whitney Fire Department said firefighters responded to the call at Beaumont Plaza on Chesnee Highway.

According to Blackwell, the 7-year-old tried to get out of the vehicle and set the security alarm off, alerting people inside the building. Blackwell said bystanders were able to talk the child into unlocking the truck from the inside.

When firefighters arrived on scene, the child was already out of the vehicle. He was evaluated by EMS after showing signs of heat illness.

An employee with the Department of Social Services was on scene, Blackwell said.

Deputies said Preston Lee Fuller was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of unlawful neglect of a child in connection with the incident. He was released from Spartanburg County Detention Center on Saturday around 10:52 a.m.
