Police: Man to be charged for destroying Spartanburg Art Museum statue

Posted: Updated:

Police said a statue in downtown Spartanburg was destroyed all thanks to a bizarre incident on Wednesday.

An official police report said the incident happened between 7:30 a.m. and 7:47 a.m. at the Spartanburg County Foundation Park on E Kennedy Street.

Police said they responded after getting a call from woman who said she and a coworker had seen a suspicious man acting irrationally in the park next door.

The responding officer stated in an official incident report that the women described the suspect before the officer then saw the suspect laying awake next to to the damaged "Lighten Up" art statue in the park square.

Police later identified the man as Steven Keller.

Upon approaching and initiating conversation with Keller, police said Keller began talking about people in the ground around them and saying "other irrational things." Police said Keller admitted to knocking a hole in the statue "to get to the man inside."

Keller also told responding officers that he'd knocked the bolted statue off its concrete base and hit it with brick pavers he'd taken from the park, damaging the statue.

Elizabeth Goddard works for the Spartanburg Art Museum which owns the statue. Police said Goddard told them the damage rendered the statue "unfixable."

Due to Keller's irrational speech and behavior, EMS responded and he was transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for evaluation.

Responding officers stated in the incident report that medical paperwork had been located indicating that Keller had mental health issues that had been addressed on Tuesday night.

Upon his release from the hospital, Keller will be charged with malicious injury to real property.
