CHEROKEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

SC Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene of a fatal wreck in Cherokee County.

The collision occurred on SC 105 at Hickory Grove Road around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said one male died in the collision and had to be removed from the truck after being trapped in the vehicle for more than a half hour. He was later mechanically extracted and transported to the hospital via EMS where he was pronounced dead, troopers say.

The coroner identified the victim as 69-year-old Paul Houston of Spartanburg.

“Mr.  Houston was driver of a Freightliner truck that was pulling a trailer hauling a piece of heavy equipment south on S.C. Highway 105 about 12:30 p.m.  The left front tire of the truck blew causing it and the trailer to travel off the left side of the road, into a wooded area and hit a tree. Mr. Houston was trapped in the vehicle for more than a half an hour before being freed by EMS and fire department personnel.  He was transported to Mary Black Health System-Gaffney and pronounced dead on arrival."

Fowler said Houston was wearing a seat belt during the collision, as was the other male passenger who was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An autopsy will be performed to assist with the continuing investigation.
