ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

When one North Carolina family awoke to a knock on the door from a Sheriff's deputy, they had no idea what to expect.

And the last thing they were expecting to find was a bear trapped inside their SUV.

Ashleigh Watkins lives with her husband and their 3-year-old son in North Asheville. It was Wednesday morning when they got the strange news from a deputy.

According to Watkins, the SUV's doors had been left unlocked, and the bear just helped himself inside.

"He opened the door himself," said Watkins. "My husband and the deputy waited for a game warden to arrive. Once he did, the warden opened the door and let the bear out."

Watkins said the bear was panting pretty badly when he was let out of the car, so they assumed he had been inside for quite some time.

"He seems to be an adolescent," Watkins explained. "He's bigger than a cub, but not full grown according to the game warden. He also has an injured paw on his right leg."

And though the furry visitor wasn't jumbo-sized, he still did plenty of damage.

"The damage he caused totaled our car," said Watkins. "He completely destroyed the interior."

Why and how the bear got into the SUV isn't clear, but Watkins said there may have been an incentive inside.

"I had gum and protein bar inside," she said.

Lucky for the Watkins family, they'll get some help recovering from the damage to their property.

"Insurance did cover this," Watkins explained. "The description on the claim is 'animal attack.'"

Watkins said she and her family will eventually get a new car, but aren't rushing to make any decisions about what kind.

But at any rate, don't forget to lock those car doors as you head inside. Human thieves aren't the only ones scoping out your goodies these days!
