GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A new project is in the works for downtown Greenville.

The first phase of construction on the Northpointe complex started Monday night. This phase will focus on road improvements around the project site.

Northpointe will sit on a triangular plot of land near the intersection of East Stone Avenue, Wade Hampton Boulevard and North Church Street.

Northpointe will have 14 crosswalks so people can walk or bike from nearby.

Greenville City Council Member Amy Ryberg-Doyle said residents wanted a complex that they could easily access.

"People feel like they an walk here and go to the restaurants and go to the grocery store," said Ryberg-Doyle.

The city invested $2.8 million dollars to this project, according to Ryberg-Doyle.

"The city's investment is one of the largest investments made outside downtown was to make public improvements in the roadway, pedestrian access, street lighting and landscaping on all three sides of the developments," said Ryberg-Doyle.

The commercial space will be located in three separate buildings, with 2,400 square feet at the intersection of Wade Hampton Boulevard and North Church Street.

There will also be 20,000 square feed along the eastern corner of Wade Hampton and East Stone Avenue. The company said all retail space will have entrances both on East Stone Avenue and the central courtyard.

Road construction is expected to finish later this year.

Starting Monday night, the section between Stone Avenue, Wade Hampton Boulevard and Column Street will be closed for construction from 8 PM until 6 AM. Expect to use detours when traveling in this area.

Phase construction is set to begin by the beginning of 2018.
