RALEIGH, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Investigators with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are warning the public about a recent phone scam where scammers are posing as a member of the SBI.

The scammers are using the agency's phone number, 919-662-450, to ask for money.

Per the release from the SBI, they will never solicit money from a private citizen. They advise anyone who receives such a call from their number to hang up.

“Unfortunately there is no way to prevent spoofing of a phone number,” said SBI Assistant Director Chris Laws who oversees the agency’s Information Technology section. “In the event you receive such a call, simply hang up.”
