BURNSVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office has risen the award amount for information that leads to the arrest of the subject responsible for shooting and killing a K-9.

The K-9 died after being shot at the home of his deputy handler.

Chris was an eight-year-old Dutch Shepherd.

Deputies said the shooting took place between 8:30 p.m. July 11 and 5:20 a.m. July 12 at a home in the Bald Mountain community. The dog later died at an animal hospital in Asheville.

“Chris was a beloved member of the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office for the past 7 years,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.

The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office initially offered a $1,000 award for information that leads to the arrest and conviction in the case.

On Monday, deputies said the reward had been raised to $5,300.
