GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greer Commission of Public Works is taking to the sky in a hot air balloon Thursday evening to remind people to call 811 before beginning outdoor projects that require digging.

The hot air balloon will be at the City of Greer's Moonlight Movies at Greer City Park at 5 p.m.

Attendees will be allowed to take tethered flights on the balloon and learn more about 811.

The CPW said people should call 811 three working days before ever breaking ground. The 811 call center will notify utility companies in the area, who will then send crews to the requested digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, paint or both.

Officials said every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone digs without calling 811 first.

"During this time of year when we know homeowners are doing DIY home improvement projects involving digging, we wanted to bring a larger-than-life reminder of why calling 811 before any digging project is critical - and that's why we're hosting the 811 Hot Air Balloon," Rob Rhodes, Greer CPW Gas Department Manager, stated in a news release.  "By calling 811 to have the underground utility lines in their area marked, homeowners and professionals are making an important decision that can help them and their communities stay safe."

Rhodes said Greer CPW has had 18 cases so far in 2017 where contractors or homeowners damaged utility lines because they didn’t use the service.
