WESTMINSTER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The City of Westminster said water service has been restored after the city’s raw water pumps were struck by lightning.

On Monday, the city posted on Facebook that as a result of a direct lightening hit, both of the city’s raw water pumps were taken down.

The city says it currently has enough water stored to last residents through Wednesday. Officials will be speaking with the City of Seneca to help supply the City of Westminster with water until at least one pump is back up and running.

“We are asking that ALL customers begin to restrict their water usage. Please do not water your grass or flowers, wash your cars, or fill your pools. We apologize for the inconvenience and we hope to have the issue resolved quickly,’ city officials said on Facebook.

On Tuesday, Mayor Brian Ramey said the lightning damaged one pump beyond repair and also caused damage to the backup pump. Ramey said workers had purchased replacement parts and were heading to the backup pump Tuesday morning to determine if it could be repaired.

"We have made arrangements for a back up water supply just in case neither pump is operable," Ramey added.

Later on Tuesday, officials said a utility crew restored service to one of the pumps and water service should continue uninterrupted.

The damage to the pump was not as severe as it initially appeared, officials said.
