GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

According to Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller, every few years a survey is conducted on how well his department is doing in the eyes of the community they serve.

The consultant firm surveyed 401 people of all ages and races. Chief Miller says in nearly every category his department received improved ratings.

"Still more work to be done, but we've had marked improvements."

Overall, the survey shows 86 percent of those polled have a positive overall perception of GPD - up 6 percent from 2014.

Chief Miller says the department has placed a lot of emphasis on improving the perception African Americans have on the department. From 6.8 to 7.4 out of 10. Youth perceptions improved as well from 7.4 to 8.1.

"We have lists of things we've done for community outreach. Cops on the Court is one of the larger ones,” explained Chief Miller. "We have a number of partner agencies working with us on Gravity, our anti-gang initiative."

Chief Miller presented the findings to the city's Public Safety Citizens Review board. Vice Chair Osa Benson commended the department, but believes more digging was needed in the results.

"There be a clear breakdown by race, class in particular,” explained Benson. “Some of the numbers looked great on paper but they were for the community as a whole."

The two most notable decreases were the overall quality of 911 dispatch and satisfaction with their detectives.

The survey shows the public's biggest concern was drugs in the city - something the chief says they're working to combat.
