Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle crash that killed a 10-year-old child and sent several others to the hospital in Spartanburg County.

According to troopers a car making a left turn near SC 9 and Candlenut Lane in the Boiling Springs area crashed into a minivan carrying five people around 10:30 Wednesday night.

Highway Patrol said the child was wearing a seat belt, but was ejected from the van. Four others in that vehicle were hurt. The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital. A two-month-old inside that car was not hurt.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the 10-year-old victim as Daniela Gonzalez Alvarado. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway Patrol said charges were pending and the MAIT team was investigating.

Spartanburg District 2 confirmed Alvarado was a student and released the following statement:

Many of you have contacted us regarding the passing of Daniela Gonzalez-Alvarado. Daniela was a rising fifth grader in our District and would have attended Boiling Springs Intermediate School this coming school year.

Last year she attended Shoally Creek Elementary School.

Shoally Creek Elementary School (SCES) teacher Lyndsi Burgess said of Daniela, "She was a beautiful, smart young lady with such a sweet, helpful personality. She was always willing to do whatever was asked of her to the very best of her ability.  She was one of those students you could never forget. A sweet spirit like hers is hard to find. She was a treasure to all who knew her."

Alison Kickler, SCES JAYS after school director, said Daniela "lit up the room when she entered it...with that smile of hers."

The thoughts and prayers of the entire Spartanburg Two family are with Daniela’s family in this difficult time. Our District Social Worker will be available to provide support for staff and students as needed.

Spartanburg County Councilman Justin Bradley weighed in on the tragedy, calling for a safety and impact study to see what improvements can be made to the stretch of Highway 9 where Daniela was killed.

Below is Bradley's full statement:

I’m saddened by this tragedy. I wish no parent had to go through this. I’m sending a letter tomorrow to SC DOT to ask them to do a traffic study on this section of Highway 9 to see what improvements can be made to accommodate the traffic and improve safety. I’ll be happy to share that letter once I’ve sent it.

Jonathan Perez, a family friend of the Alvarados, created a tribute video in her honor.
