Coroner: Clinton homeowner discovered body of missing man on property

CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The coroner confirmed a man's body found on a property in Laurens County on Saturday is that of a missing man.

Officials with the Laurens County Sheriff's Office said they got a call just before 6:30 p.m.about the discovery of a deceased person on Imperial Drive in Clinton.

Once they arrived on scene, deputies said the homeowner told them that he saw vulture near the wood line at the back of his home when he pulled into his yard.

When he got out of his vehicle, the homeowner told deputies he'd noticed a foul smell. Initially, the homeowner told deputies he thought an animal may have died, but when he went to investigate the situation, he found a deceased person laying inside the wood line.

Deputies said it is not clear if the death is suspicious or not at the time and they are awaiting more details from the coroner.

On Sunday, investigators with the Laurens County Sheriff's Office were still on scene.Stay with FOX Carolina for the latest.

On Monday, the Laurens County coroner identified the victim as 59-year-old Mitchell Edward Scott, who was last seen on July 15 at his home on Leesville Church Road. He was reported missing by his family on July 17.

The coroner said Scott died on July 20, two days before his body was found.

His death has been ruled natural, but the cause has not yet been determined. Toxicology testing is being conducted.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation.
