GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenwood Police Department was called to an accidental self-inflicted shooting at a store on Sunday morning.

Officers said they received a report of a gun fired at the Walmart on Bypass 25 near East Cambridge Street around 10:20 a.m.

When police responded, they said the scene was quickly contained and they located 27-year-old James Elliott Johnson with a gunshot wound to the leg.

According to police, Johnson was carrying a firearm in his pocket and claimed he was trying to activate the gun's safety when he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Walmart officials also confirmed that the shooting was accidental.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Officers said Johnson was fairly cooperative, but while trying to assist him with his injury they found Xanax and marijuana in his pockets.

Johnson is charged with unlawful carry of a pistol, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

Police said he is in stable condition and receiving medical attention for his injury before being transported to the Greenwood County Detention Center.
