RUTHERFORDTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers said a Cowpens man died after crashing into a creek in Rutherford County Monday morning.

The crash happened on Luckadoo Hill Extension, also known as NC Highway 120.

Troopers said 35-year-old David Shannon Rhymer was traveling south when he ran off the road, traveled through the woods and overturned into an area of a creek where waist-deep water pools. Troopers said other areas of the creek are much shallower.

Troopers said Rhymer died in the vehicle.

Speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash and troopers said an autopsy will be performed.

A dive team from Henderson County was called to Rutherford County to remove the vehicle from the water, according to Sheriff Chris Francis.

According to his obituary, Rhymer was born in Spartanburg and is survived by two sons. A celebration of his life will be held July 29 at 2 p.m. at his mother's home on Iron Bridge Road.
