WEST UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Oconee County Coroner's Office confirmed the sudden death of a law enforcement official on Tuesday.

The coroner said 47-year-old Charles Edward Sanders Jr., the police chief of West Union, passed away Tuesday at GHS Oconee Memorial Hospital.

Coroner Karl Addis said Sanders had a preexisting cardiac history and suffered a cardiac arrest after arriving home from work.

Resuscitation was attempted while Sanders was transported to the hospital, but he died at 5:51 p.m. His passing was ruled a natural death and Addis said an autopsy will not be performed.

Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw issued the following statement regarding Chief Sanders:

It is with deep sadness that we at the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office mourn the loss of our friend West Union Police Chief Charles Sanders.

I got to know Chief Sanders in my interim role as Westminster’s Police Chief in 2012 where we served together.  Chief Sanders was a humble man that got into law enforcement to help others.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to keep Chief Sanders’ family in your thoughts and prayers.

On Wednesday, the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said effective immediately it would be answering calls for police service in West Union.

“If the citizens of West Union need law enforcement assistance, they can call 864-638-4111 or call 911 if it is an emergency situation,” Crenshaw said.  “Our officers stand ready to respond when dispatched to any calls for service. We ask citizens to be aware that non-emergent response times may be longer than what citizens normally receive.”
