PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Family members have put up a makeshift memorial for Josh Martin, the young man who died after being struck by an Anderson County deputy who was chasing another vehicle.

The crash happened on SC Highway 8 at the Moore Road intersection.

Martin, 22, became trapped in his Honda Civic and died at the scene on Sunday night, according to Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore.

A memorial placed at the site Wednesday morning includes teddy bears, solar lighting, and a message from Martin's mother: "Josh, I miss your laugh and hugs and listening to your dreams. It's not complicated anymore!"

Martin was a student at Greenville Technical College.

The deputy was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

The suspect the deputy was chasing got away.

Pastor Friar Dixon said he was the last person to speak to Martin before the accident.

"We were talking in my driveway and the accident happened about a mile and a half away from my house," Dixon said. "As he was pulling off I flagged him down."

Dixon said he reminded Martin about a plan they had for that Sunday morning. He said before driving off, Martin cracked a joke which was nothing out of the ordinary.

"The thing that I remember most about Josh as a person was he never put much thought into what other people thought about him," Dixon said. "Not in a cocky or arrogant way, he liked everybody and he included everybody."

Dixon said this week has been emotional not only for the church and the family, but also for the community as a whole. He said Martin's spirit was kind and loved by many.

The pastor said that Mosaic Church in Easley would host a Celebration of Life ceremony for Martin Wednesday evening.

The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the church located at 1729 Powdersville Road.

Funeral Services will be held at 4 p.m. PM on Friday, July 28, 2017 at the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, located on Powdersville Road.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, at the funeral home.
