GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Laken Miles came into the world weighing only just over one pound, but he left a huge impact on the Upstate community.

The preemie baby was born at 26 and a half weeks and battled many odds including a chronic lung disease which required a tracheotomy and tube to breathe.

At 10 and a half months old, Laken passed away on July 24.

"He was an amazing little boy," mother Becky Miles said.

Laken first captured the hearts of the people of the Upstate when he was photographed at 4 weeks old wearing a "World's Smallest Superhero" shirt to honor Jacob Hall, a 6-year-old who was killed in a shooting at Townville Elementary School.

In his obituary, Laken was described as a "fighter like no other" who loved his pacifier, fish tank and visits from sister Skylar. In addition to mom Becky Miles and sister Skylar, Laken is survived by father Eddie Miles.

A visitation for Laken will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Northwest. Laken will be laid to rest in Graceland Cemetery West after a service on Saturday at noon in the Northwest Chapel.

The Miles family thanked the Greenville Health System NICU staff and asked, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the NICU at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
