GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Clemson University said it has launched a new certification program to keep up with the fast growth in the state's automotive industry and allow industry workers an opportunity to stay on the job while gaining the skills they need to advance.

The two-semester program is based at the CUICAR center in Greenville and offers students a certificate in automotive engineering.

While graduate degrees remain central to the Clemson automotive engineering program, the university said some area businesses will be better served by a certificate program that allows employees to keep working.

The certificate program is a condensed version of the master's program that covers automotive product innovation, automotive systems, vehicle dynamics, and propulsion systems, the university said.

Registration is now open for industry employees and Clemson undergraduates. The first course in the certificate program will begin Aug. 25.

Clemson said more than 400 auto-related companies call South Carolina home, and the state employs 66,000 people in the auto industry.
