NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect in multiple car thefts who deputies said also led city police on a chase.

Deputies said they were initially called to the Waffle House on SC 773 near I-26 after workers reported a suspicious man.

Deputies did not find the man but said a vehicle he was seen around had been stolen earlier in the week and another stolen vehicle from Spartanburg County had been found.

Deputies said city police officers later saw the suspect in the Citgo on Evans at Wilson.

The man reportedly ran from the gas station, stole an UTV vehicle, and led Newberry police on a chase.

The chase ended when the man wrecked the UTV into a utility pole on Kinard Street.

Deputies sent out an alert just after 2 a.m. advising that a "serial car thief" was on the run and asking people living in the area of Kinard and Main streets to lock their car doors and remove any car keys that were left in vehicles.

Just before 2:30 a.m. deputies announced that the suspect had been taken into custody.

The suspect’s name and charges have not yet been released.
