NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A deputy with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is being called a hero after his quick actions saved an injured boater’s life.

On July 22 at about 7:30 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call about a boating accident on Lake Murray. Lieutenant Michael Claytor arrived within four minutes of receiving the call and jumped in to action, requesting the boater to pull up to the boat ramp so he could assist.

As soon as the boater arrived at the boat ramp the deputy noticed a large laceration on the man and major bleeding from his knee to his foot. Deputy Claytor immediately removed the tourniquet from his belt and applied it to the man’s leg above the knee to stop the bleeding.

Rescue Squad and EMS members arrived, and the man was taken by helicopter for medical treatment.

Sheriff Lee Foster said the deputy “almost certainly saved the man’s life” by using the tourniquet to stop the bleeding until he could get medical treatment.

The original intent for the tourniquet is for the deputy to use on themselves if they are shot, but Sheriff Foster said it has shown that the tool can also be of help to civilians.

"While this is the first time that a tourniquet was deployed and proved lifesaving, we are convinced that this tool will continue to prove itself invaluable for law enforcement and citizens throughout Newberry County," said Sheriff Lee Foster.
