HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Joey Bryson read from his heart.

"Colossians 1:17 says that in Him all things hold together," he said as he held a notebook.

As he read, he paused, because many of the words on that notebook were hard to read and even more difficult to say.

"Our family is heartbroken and saddened by the loss of our dear father at the hands of a man who had no love or compassion for his fellow man," he said.

However, Joey and Rick Bryson say they have a strong faith and they wanted to talk about their father.

"Our faith is something our father taught us when we were small and it's what holds this family together," Joey Bryson said.

They say their father Thomas Bryson was humble and quiet, but a giant of a man.

"He raised us to love and respect our wives. He raised us to love our children and most of all, put Christ at the forefront and center of our lives," Rick Bryson said.

Investigators say Philip Stroupe II kidnapped and killed Thomas Bryson during a crime spree that spanned several counties and days. Hundreds of volunteers looked for him.

"I think that just reflects who he was. He was a good man. Even though he was a quiet man,I think he touched a lot of people's hearts," Rick Bryson said.

A relative, part of the search team, found Bryson's body in a cornfield in Arden. Flowers in honor of Thomas Bryson are now at the field. The Bryson family says out of of all that's happened grows hope for understanding.

"We would ask why a million times and we'll never know the answer to that. But, we know that God is good and things happen for a reason," Joey Bryson said.

Joey Bryson held onto the word, his bible, a book he says will help guide his family to find words to say and to his honor his father.

"He was a good man," Rick Bryson said.
