EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

After an investigation, the Solicitor's Office and the Anderson County Sheriff's Office determined no charges will be filed against an Upstate woman in a fatal shooting.

On Jan. 21, deputies responded to shots fired on Hamlin Road and found 37-year-old Jerry Wayne Sanders Jr. deceased. Sanders was shot to death by homeowner 50-year-old Debra Sheridan.

Sheridan told investigators she heard a noise coming from her shed and fired two warning shots before Sanders came out from behind the shed. When he did, Sheridan said she fired a shot in his direction.

On Wednesday, Solicitor David Wagner announced Sheridan acted in self-defense in the shooting. To establish self-defense, the solicitor said "an individual must show that they were without fault in bringing on the difficulty, that they were or believed they were in imminent danger of losing their life or of sustaining serious bodily injury."

Wagner said Sheridan retrieved her handgun after hearing a loud crash as she opened the door to her home. Sanders was dressed in dark clothing and had his face covered at the time of the incident, Wagner said.

"His behavior would startle anyone in a similar situation, and it is not unreasonable to think that to protect herself after feeling threatened Ms. Sheridan believed she had to fire a shot in the direction of the large male charging at her," Wagner and Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said in a joint statement.

They said there was no evidence Sheridan and Sanders were in contact on the day of the shooting.

Sheridan was arrested after the incident and charged with probation violation, but will not face additional charges.
