Watching the tropics for possible development

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The tropics could see a spike in activity over the next week.

After tropical storm Cindy in late June, things have remained relatively quiet in the tropics in the month of July.

We saw two weak tropical systems (Don and Emily) form but neither reached anywhere near hurricane status.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is watching a couple of areas of low pressure in the Atlantic. One is just north of South America and is forecast to move northwest toward Mexico. The other is just west of Africa and is also forecast to move our direction. There is no immediate threat to the U.S., but that could  change in the coming days, so be sure to stay with us for updates!

Both are still young, but if they do end up developing, the names they would have would be Franklin and Gert.
