Firefighters battle brush fire at landfill in Pickens Co.

LIBERTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a fire reported at a landfill in Pickens County.

The fire broke out at the Pickens County landfill located on Old Liberty Highway around 1:30 p.m. Liberty Fire Department responded to the scene.

Liberty Fire Chief Chris Rowland said stumps, branches and other debris caught fire. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Five departments and 40 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze.

Just before 4:45 p.m., Rowland said the fire had been contained. He described it as a very large fire.

He said no firefighters were injured, but he was working to keep crews hydrated.
