Lake Keowee (FOX Carolina) -

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said an Anderson woman died after being found unresponsive in a shallow area of Lake Keowee on Friday.

According to Addis, the 62-year-old woman passed away at the GHS-Oconee Memorial Hospital emergency department about an hour after she was found unresponsive in shallow water at the lake.

Addis said first responders received a call about a near drowning victim at the Keowee Sailing Club near Seneca around 2 p.m.

The woman and two of her female friends had been wading in the lake when her friends discovered her body, unresponsive, in near waist-deep water.

Witnesses said she never called out for help or appeared to struggle before she was found unresponsive in the water. Officials were told that the woman could swim and was a very active individual.

Addis said the woman was pulled from the water and moved to the shoreline where CPR was initiated. EMS provided advanced life support and transported the woman to the hospital.

The woman has been identified as 62-year-old Barbara Lynn Malone of Anderson.

The coroner said an autopsy on Sunday determined that Malone died due to fresh water drowning. He said autopsy results did not show any apparent medical issues that could explain why Malone went unresponsive. The death will be classified as accidental.
