SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said a driver and passenger were both arrested after a pursuit in Spartanburg County.

According to an incident report from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, police, deputies and officials with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit were working a public safety checkpoint at S. Converse and Collins Avenue when a black BMW pulled up.

Deputies said an officer signaled for the car to stop, and initially it slowed down, but then continued driving through the checkpoint.

A deputy then pulled behind the BMW and attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Duncan Street. The report said the BMW slowed down, pulled into the right shoulder of the road and then continued traveling along Duncan Street, and a pursuit ensued.

Deputies pursued the vehicle as it turned right onto Caulder Avenue and then onto Hudson-Barksdale Blvd before turning right onto E Hampton Avenue, where the report says deputies saw the rear passenger in the vehicle throw what appeared to be a revolver, out of the window.

The vehicle came to a stop at E Hampton Avenue and S Collins Street shortly after the pistol was thrown from it, said the report. Deputies said both the driver, 31-year-old Crystal Dominique Lovett, and passenger 32-year-old Darius Keyon Benson were arrested at the scene.

A deputy also responded to collect the pistol thrown from the vehicle.

Lovett was charged with failure to stop and open container/liquor. Benson was initially transported to jail on  an outstanding Family Court warrant, but was then charged with possession of a stolen pistol.

They were both transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center. As of 6:10 p.m., Benson was still being held on $13,370 bond.
