ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Department of Natural Resources announced a man is charged in the boating accident that killed Deputy Devin Hodges.

On June 1, the 30-year-old deputy was engaging in a joint marine training session between the Anderson County Sheriff's Office at the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Hodges, another deputy and a corps operator were thrown from the 19-foot Pioneer boat when an incident occurred, resulting in Hodges drowning.

On Friday a DNR spokesperson identified the operator of the boat as 37-year-old Joseph Jeff Fleming of Pendleton. Fleming worked with the Army Corps of Engineers and is charged with reckless homicide in connection with the accident.

Spokesperson Robert McCullough said Fleming was driving the boat and attempted to do a maneuver which ejected the three occupants.

He was booked into the Anderson County Detention Center but released Friday on a $25,000 bond.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office released the following statement:

As we are still in mourning over the loss of Master Deputy Devin Hodges, our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and all those involved in this tragic accident.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office appreciates a long-standing relationship with both the Army Corps of Engineers and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and will continue to work together with each agency as we serve the citizens of Anderson County.
