ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The mother of an Upstate college student, killed in a deputy-involved chase last month, is finding traces of her son everywhere she looks.

"Josh just didn't want mediocrity, he was striving for something better," said Teresa Bowen. "He didn't want to settle for things to be status quo. He wanted more out of life."

Bowen is the mother of Josh Martin. She says little things remind her of her son every day.

"It just looks like a piece of trash that would've easily been discarded," she said holding a CD envelope.

It a hand written message from Josh to his mother.

"It says, 'Oh mother oh mother, today I bring you this poem free verse and free rhythm, because it's origin of creativity aren't bound by space or time nor by materials or the place, this is the reasons for the CDs, this poem is a symbol of our relationship and it's depth,'" Bowen read.

Martin was killed when an Anderson County deputy was chasing after a stolen car, colliding into Martin's vehicle on Moore Road. Martin passed away on the scene.

Teresa and her family went back to Martin's destroyed car, searching for the CD that went with the note, but it hasn't been found.

"He just wanted the world to be a better place, and he wanted to be a part of making it a better place," said Bowen.

Bowen showed home videos she'd just discovered. In those videos, Martin shared everything from his goals for 2017 to different inventions he had for cars.

"He was just so quick. If he wanted to learn it, he would pick it up," Bowen explained. "He always had that warm personality. Josh was always just true to himself."

She said people will remember her son as a true individual with a sense of faith, friendships, smarts and a gratitude his mother says we could all learn from.

"I'm going to miss that boy but I have so many treasures that I can go and say, 'that was my kid, that was my kid,'" said Bowen.
