SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters are investigating what sparked a large fire at a condemned hotel complex in Spartanburg.

Firefighters were called to the site of the former Spartanburg Hotel and Resort at 200 International Drive just before midnight Monday.

Captain Derrick Miller of Westview-Fairforest Fire Department said flames were coming from the roof of the building when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were still working to put out the fire after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Tracy Williams with the West view-Fairforest Fire Department said firefighters were conducting defensive operations.

"We can't put people inside the building for safety reasons since it is condemned," Williams said. "We have to set the ladder trucks up and do the best we can from outside."

The fire damaged anywhere from 75 to 100 percent of the building, Williams said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

There was no word on injuries.
