SALEM, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The US Geological Survey said a small earthquake was detected near Lake Jocassee Tuesday morning.

The 1.7 magnitude quake occurred around 4:30 a.m.

The epicenter was 1.4 miles from Jocassee, 20 miles from Clemson, and 29 miles from Berea.

The USGS said quakes of such little magnitude are typically not felt by humans.
