PENDLETON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Superintendent for Anderson District 4 schools said Pendleton Elementary School will not close.

Dr. Joanne Avery said the district will move forward with six schools, which will all be maintained until the community is ready for a new school. The school board made the announcement regarding Pendleton Elementary on Monday night.

The decision not to close the school was in part influenced by a recent structural analysis of Riverside Middle School, Avery said. According to recent tests, deterioration in the school is isolated and can be fixed. It was initially thought the structural integrity of the school's construction was in question.

The district was considering moving Riverside Middle students into the Pendleton Elementary building and transferring the elementary students to other district schools.

Avery said in the future a team will be appointed to study the needs of the district and recommend steps for its future.
