GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It's a bad habit that can lead to big consequences, and if you're caught texting and driving, it can lead to a ticket in South Carolina.

Right now, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is cracking down on those texting behind the wheel, as roads get crowded with holiday traffic.

Trooper Joe Hovis with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said, "We will be beefing up our troopers and looking for people who are texting and driving."

There can be deadly consequences for those who drive distracted.  According to the latest numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,477 people were killed in 2015 because of distracted driving.

Hovis said, they're trying to prevent that, and keep holiday travelers safe.

"A lot of times when I'm teaching a class I ask people, would you close your eyes for five seconds while you're driving on the interstate?  And the answer is no. But basically, that's what you're doing when you're looking down at text," he said.

The enforcement campaign started on Monday and runs through Sunday.  Troopers are using unmarked patrol vehicles for the initiative and Highway Patrol said each vehicle will be staffed by two troopers.  One person will be driving, and the other will be looking for those texting behind the wheel.
