GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A family tradition during the holidays is coming to an end after this year, and the decision to cease Roper Mountain Holiday Lights is final.

The Roper Mountain Science Center Association and the Rotary Club of Greenville are not looking for any sponsors for the future. Organizers say operating the Roper Mountain Holiday Lights after this season is no longer feasible.

There is a lot of pride about what’s been accomplished, though. Since it started in 1992, RMHL has given more than $2.5 million back to local organizations, education programs and scholarships.

“I grew up coming to Roper Mountain Holiday Lights every single year so it’s definitely a tradition in my family,” says Laura Moore.

Moore serves on the board of the Rotary Club of Greenville, and says operating the Roper Mountain Holiday Lights requires a lot of resources and volunteer manpower. Plus, there’s a lot of competition these days.

“We’ve had other professional light shows come into our space, so we’re dealing with competition now and we’ve never been a professional lights show,” says Moore. “The board looked at the cost of maintaining and adding to our displays. At the end of the day, this is a charity event and a massive undertaking for our volunteers.”

All the lights, displays, metal buildings and equipment will be sold via online auction so families do have a unique opportunity to take home some of their favorite memories.

Roper Mountain Holiday Lights will be open nightly from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. beginning on Thanksgiving through December 30. Prices start at $10 per vehicle.
