WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman says the school is "sitting tight" as the legal process continues for assistant basketball coach Jamill Jones who police say punched a New York City tourist who later died. Wellman spoke to The Associated Press four days after the school placed Jones on leave. The AD said Tuesday there have been no further updates since then. Police say Jones attacked Sandor Szabo earlier this month in New York, causing him to fall and smash his head on the sidewalk.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - A former member of Clemson's athletic department John Samuel Blackman has been arrested on a grand larceny charge involving missing university property. Blackman had earlier been charged with a misdemeanor in petit larceny involving items that are $2,000 or less. The latest charge involves items of $2,000 to $10,000 and is a felony that could carry five years in jail if Blackman is convicted. Blackman retired this past June. He was released on $5,000 bond.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Clemson is the overwhelming favorite to win a fourth straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship. The Tigers have lost just two games against league opponents in the past three seasons. Another title would make Clemson the first team to win four straight ACC titles since Florida State's dominating run through the 1990s. Clemson headlines an Atlantic Division featuring significant changes for contenders FSU, Louisville and North Carolina State. Miami is picked to win the Coastal Division.
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - East Carolina says former Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart will remain with the school for an extra three months. Chancellor Cecil Station on Tuesday announced that Hart will remain in his role as special advisor to the chancellor for athletics until Dec. 15. The extension will allow him to observe the full football season and the start of basketball season.
