HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials with The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality say nearly 59,000 gallons of untreated waste water were accidentally released into a body of water in Henderson County on Friday.

The NCDEQ said they were notified of the spill on Saturday.

Per the release, the City of Hendersonville's waste water Collection System experienced the discharge "from a manhole located at 99 Balfour Road due to excessive rainfall and a damaged manhole, resulting in sanitary sewer overflow." The spill took place at approximately 9:22 a.m. on Friday.

As a result, officials say approximately 58,900 gallons of untreated waste water entered Mud Creek in the French Broad River Basin.

The NCDEQ is reviewing the matter.
