NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Newberry County Sheriff’s has charged a man they said struck a deputy and a police officer with a car after marijuana was discovered in the vehicle.

The incident happened on January 10, just after 9:30 p.m. as the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, Newberry Police Department, and State Law Enforcement Division were conducting a checkpoint at the intersection of Vincent Street and Giff Street.

Deputies said Joshua Mathis arrived at the checkpoint driving a dark green Tahoe. When he stopped the deputy looked inside the vehicle and saw a large bag of marijuana lying of the seat. When the deputy opened the door, Mathis hit the gas, causing the deputy to get pulled by the door. The deputy was knocked to the ground and dragged a short distance.

The Tahoe also struck a Newberry Police Department officer who was also at the check point. The officer was able to get mostly out of the way and only suffered a glancing blow.

Mathis reportedly sped off and a chase ensued. The Tahoe was found empty a short distance away and the bag containing 12-ounces of marijuana was still in the car.

On January 12, deputies said Joshua Mathis, 26, turned himself in and was charged with two counts of attempted murder, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and failure to stop for law enforcement.

The deputy and police officer suffered only minor injuries.

Deputies said Mathis’ girlfriend called law enforcement after the chase and reported the vehicle stolen. Deputies said investigators determined she lied about the theft to cover up Mathis’ crime. Titilayo Khadija Robinson, 25, was charged with filing a false police report.
