Pickens Co Sheriff hopes partnership with Behavioral Health Services stops addiction

PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

After more than 8 months of investigating, Pickens County deputies have charged 13 mid and upper level methamphetamine dealers and suppliers in the area.

"These people are really running the drug racket here in Pickens County,” explained Pickens County Sherriff Rick Clark. “That's why they're such a good target for us."

Sheriff Clark said it’s a drug bust that will put a temporary dent into the drug traffickers in Pickens County.

"We'll never arrest ourselves out of this situation that we have,” he explained. “Nationwide or countywide we'll never arrest our way out of this."

That's why they’re partnering with the Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County.

"With community partners,” explained Deputy Director, Angela Farmer. “Maybe we have a chance to save a few lives."

They work to try and get help for those addicted to methamphetamines.

"They're able to get the help that they need and not be incarcerated,” said Farmer. “It doesn't always help."

The agency has been chosen as one of seven agencies across the country for a research project by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to help get people off methamphetamines. The clinical trials include 2 non-addictive medicines, Vivitrol and Wellbutrin, along with health screenings at no cost to participants.

"When they try to stop using a substance, their body goes through withdrawals or they have consequences,” said Farmer. “It gives them an opportunity to get some medical attention and support and help."

Farmer says they need people to volunteer to complete the study. They require 370 people for their trial. Sheriff Clark hopes it will hurt the drug trade in Pickens County and keep people clean and out of jail.
