SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg County Coroner confirms three people were found dead at a residence in Landrum on Saturday.

The coroner says the deaths are violent in nature. The coroner said the three deaths are being investigated as homicides.

All three victims were located at a residence on the 600 block of Landrum Mill Road around 6 a.m.

The coroner identified the victims as 23-year-old Nathan Louis Poffenberger, 59-year-old Francis Delancey Richards, and her husband Fred Richards.

According to the coroner, Poffenberger went over to the Richards' home on Friday night and did not return. His father went to look for him and saw someone laying on the floor through the window, the coroner said.

The father forced his way into the house and found all three victims in the same room, the coroner said.

"It was like it was not real and it was a dream. That whole day all I wanted to wake up and it not be real, but it was," said Daniel Bolt, a close friend of the victims.

“Our biggest question is why because anybody that knew Nathan knew that he was a great person and he didn’t deserve this. He did not deserve this,” said Coreen Poffenberger, Nathan's mom.

Nathan Poffenberger's family also released this statement following his death:

"Nathan was a great kid , he and his father were avid fishing buddies. He had 3 hobbies, fishing, mowing grass and collecting Jeff Gordon memorabilia. He was huge into Nascar and his room reflects this. He visited the other victims on a daily basis just to make sure they were ok. Nathan was never in any trouble or did anything to disrupt anyone. He was kind and level headed... He was an innocent by-stander who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. We are all grieving and not sure if anything will ever be the same."

A GoFundMe has been set up here to help with funeral expenses.

The funeral for Francis Richards will be held on Tuesday at Petty Funeral Home in Landrum. The service is at 5 p.m.

Fred Richards' funeral will take place on Friday at McFarland Funeral Home in Tryon. Service is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

"We just don't understand why someone would have so much hatred in them to hurt those three people that would have done anything for them," said Tina Hicks, Fred Richards' daughter.

Deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said it is not known if this was an isolated event. Deputies are asking that anyone who may have been in contact with the victims between the hours of 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 a.m. on Saturday to contact Detective Sergeant Joey Guffey at 864-503-4670.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.

"We have three people who have been brutally murdered and until we have this person behind bars in jail it's a concern to me, so pay attention to what's going on out there," said Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, "But I do believe whoever did this was familiar with these people."

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner's office and sheriff's office. No suspects have been named at this time.
