ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into possible criminal allegations Buncombe County sheriff's deputy Charles "Josh" Wilhelm.

Sheriff Van Duncan met with Wilhelm, a captain with the department who started in 2004, on Jan. 9 after being notified of a complaint. Duncan said he discussed the allegations and suspended Wilhelm with pay.

The sheriff contacted the region's SBI Special Agent in Charge later that day to notify him of the complaint and to say he would be sending a formal letter requesting an SBI investigation into the allegations against Wilhelm.

The sheriff's office said Monday the allegations are possibly criminal in nature. An SBI spokesperson said the investigation is related to assault allegations.

After a briefing with SBI regarding the investigation, Duncan made the decision Monday to terminate Wilhelm from the department. According to a termination letter released by the agency, Wilhelm was fired for violations of general conduct policy.
