GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Cherokee County sheriff said deputies are searching for a vehicle and a person of interest after a fatal shooting in Gaffney early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Steve Mueller said the victim was found dead in  a 2013 Chevy Malibu on Commerce Drive near the Suminoe Textile plant.

The victim was identified as Matthew Markess Littlejohn, 33, of Panorama Street in Boiling Springs.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said a 911 call was placed just after 12:30 a.m. from another man in the vehicle with Littlejohn to report the shooting.

The caller told 911 that they had fled the shooters and were in the entrance to the textile plant in an industrial park on Commerce Drive.

"According to the passenger, he and the victim were at another location when someone fired several rounds into the vehicle with one striking Littlejohn, who fled the scene, driving into the Meadow Creek Industrial Park," Fowler said.

Mueller said the passenger told deputies that the gunman followed them from a gas station on SC 18 at Pleasant School Road and then began firing shots at the Malibu as it headed north on SC 18.

Littlejohn continued onto SC 329 and pulled onto Commerce Drive, where the vehicle stopped.

"The shooter fled the scene and remains unknown; however investigators obtained video footage from a local convenience store of a vehicle and person of interest," Mueller said.

"You hear of different things all over but for this area right here, that is very unusual," said Tina Teasley who works at a nearby restaurant.

Fowler said an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The sheriff's office identified the suspect as Salvador Marquez. Marquez is 5'10" and weighs 170 pounds.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Marquez is asked  to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-Crime-SC immediately.

"Those bullets could have struck an innocent person traveling on I85. Either on Highway 18," said Mueller, "It's very concerning that someone would shootout of a moving vehicle into another vehicle"

A spokesperson for Suminoe released this statement about the incident:

We are certainly distraught about the shooting incident that occurred outside of our facility near the entrance to our warehouse but want to reassure the public that none of our employees were involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family.
