SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Solicitor Barry Barnette said a judge on Tuesday sentenced a Spartanburg man who robbed a bank, fired a shotgun into the building, and then stole a getaway truck at gunpoint to 20 years in prison.

Genuine Truth Banner, 27, of Moore, pleaded guilty to bank robbery, 2 counts of armed robbery, 5 counts of kidnapping and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The robber happened on Aug. 29, 2016 at the Spartan Federal Credit Union, located on Charisma Drive.

Banner wore a black ski mask and had the shotgun in his grasp when he walked in the bank, then pulled three people out of side office and pulled two others from behind the counter before firing the shotgun, Barnette said.

Banner ran off with cash and then stole a Chevrolet truck at gunpoint during the escape. The truck was abandoned a few minutes later in the parking lot of the old Campus Place Apartments. Investigators believe Banner fled the area in a BMW that had been parked in that area prior to the bank robbery.

“This was a brazen bank robbery and I’m thankful nobody was hurt during this scary sequence of events,” Barnette said in a news release.

Banner was arrested at his grandmother’s house later that day. The money, the gun, and some of the clothes he had been wearing in the robbery were in his possession.

The stolen money was recovered along with the gun and the some of the clothing worn during the hold-up.

Banner must serve 17 years before he is eligible for release.
