SIMPSONVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Police have made an arrest in a deadly shooting at a Simpsonville apartment complex in January.

Simpsonville Police were called to Gateway Village Apartments on Boyd Avenue at approximately 7 p.m. on January 23 in reference to gun shots.

Upon arrival, police said one victim was found wounded in the parking lot.

The Greenville County Coroner later identified that victim as 21-year-old Collin Starcher of Greer. Starcher died on scene, the coroner said.

His former coach, Stan Carpenter, looked through old pictures said he doesn't need them to remember Starcher's smile. He said that will always be engrained in his mind.

"I can't tell you how many points he scored when he played with me or how many games we won, but I sometimes get on my players while we are playing and I could get on him and he would just look at me and smile and get back out there,” Carpenter said. “It would always come back to the smile."

Just thinking about the kind of person Starcher was has Carpenter smiling himself, but he said he's still shocked by his sudden death.

"I didn't really sleep well from the time that I got the news, even until after his services because of how close to home this came," Carpenter said.

Carpenter describing the player he knew as someone who would avoid conflict at any cost, someone who wouldn't hurt a fly. That's why his jaw dropped when Starcher’s mom told him the news that he had been shot and killed in a parking lot.

"You would not expect this call, it really hurt me really badly," the coach said. "Just couldn't really wrap my head around what would lead him to be killed this way."

Carpenter was the one to lead the services, his mother asking him to speak about Starcher and his life, taken too soon.

"It really kind of knocked me back because she said that I had such an impact on Collin's life but what she didn't know is that he had an impact on my life as well,” Carpenter said. “To be around him, to catch that infectious smile. At the services I told people if he ever looked at you and gave you that smile then he had you hooked because that's the kind of person that he was."

He said he wants Starcher's death to be a reminder, not only to his players but to young men everywhere that violence is not the answer.

"There's got to be a stop to this and there's got to be education on how to deal with conflict without these kinds of results," Carpenter said.

On Thursday, officers arrested 22-year-old Davorien Laquez Ray in connection with the case. Ray is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Bond for Ray was denied.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact the Simpsonville Police Department at 864-967-9536.
